COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army is asking locals to volunteer for its Red Kettle donation drive and to donate to its Angel Tree program this holiday season—efforts aimed at helping families in need.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • United Way of Central Texas will host the 15th Annual Chrome & Carols Festival of Trees on Dec. 2nd at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Conference Center to support its programs—this event will include festive displays and activities designed to bring local families together during the holiday season.  Killeen Daily Herald

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rossler’s Blue Cord BBQ, a family-run food truck in Harker Heights near Smile Doctors Orthodontics, earned a Texas Monthly Top 50 honor for its smoked meats and inventive sides—while donating leftovers to local organizations. The truck serves on Wednesdays from 11-2 p.m. and Thursdays from 11-4 p.m. and will be present at festivals across Texas.  KCEN-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Craftwork was the focus of the Westphalia Altar Society craft show held on Sunday at Westphalia Parish Hall—visitors saw many displays of handmade work.  Killeen Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KISD earned Career and Technical Education District of Distinction honors for the second year in a row from state officials, and the award (recognizing improved training) reflects the district’s commitment (to quality career education).  Killeen Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Greg Abbott inducted Christine A. Nix into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame on November 6 — the honor recognizes her historic role as the first African American woman promoted into the Texas Rangers Division and her lifelong dedication to public service that began with the Temple Police Department.  KCEN-TV

  • Three area hospitals earned an A safety grade from The Leapfrog Group—an independent watchdog—that released its fall report Thursday, showing strong safety measures at each facility.  Killeen Daily Herald
