COMMUNITY NEWS

  • University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will hold its military appreciation event at a football game on Saturday in Belton. A park clean-up event will take place in Temple on Sunday—local volunteers are encouraged to join the effort.  Temple Daily Telegram
  • This week, Central Texas will host fall colors, festive fun flavors, and Veterans Day events — local residents may need a light jacket for outdoor activities as dusk comes earlier.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • The Human-Animal Support Coalition & Temple Christian Outreach held an event that provided pet food, leashes, toys, and supplies to families in need in Temple. The drive aimed to keep pets with their owners during tough times and reduce the risk of animals entering shelters.  KCEN-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Temple and Belton ISDs have been named Districts of Distinction for their strong career and technical education programs—Temple ISD offers 17 study programs while Belton ISD earned the honor for a second year. They will be formally recognized at the CTAT Winter Leadership Conference in San Antonio in February.  KCEN-TV
  • Central Texas 4C Head Start, which has served over 500 families in Bell County for 60 years, is in danger of shutting down if federal funding is not renewed after December—program leaders are seeking alternative funds and urging community members to contact congressional representatives to help keep its services running in Temple and nearby towns.  KCEN-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bell County saw West Nile Virus activity confirmed by the Harker Heights Fire Department on social media on Thursday and the Bell County Public Health District advised residents to drain standing water and use EPA-approved repellent—also recommending mosquito dunks for water that cannot be drained.  KXXV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Harker Heights came from behind to beat the Temple Wildcats 24-14 and clinch its fourth straight district title, making Killeen ISD history. The team will host Cedar Hill in the playoffs (this historic win is the first four-peat since the 1950s).  KCEN-TV
