COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Texans have several exciting events this weekend—Ironman 70.3 Waco takes place on Sunday at Indian Spring Park, the Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo runs until Oct. 12 at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, and the Boy Scouts host a Fall Family Festival today at Camp Tahuaya in Belton with the Central Texas Soul Fest scheduled on Oct. 11 at Temple’s MLK Festival Grounds.  KCEN-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SeAH Superalloy Technologies is preparing to open its first U.S. special alloy manufacturing facility in Temple—company leaders say the multimillion-dollar plant will bring mass hirings to boost ties with local suppliers and customers.  Temple Daily Telegram

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Temple hosted its monthly FirstFriday celebration yesterday, Oct. 3, with music performances and special restaurant offers. Rebecca Jane headlined Unplugged from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Extraco Parklet by Treno, while other acts played at Biergarten at Bird Creek Brewing + on the corner of Central and First.  KCEN-TV
  • At the Night of Promise event, local residents gathered as speakers shared emotional testimonies and raised nearly $100,000. Rebeccah Madison spoke from the heart as the audience moved from laughing to crying to cheering — showing the strong impact of the evening.  Killeen Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 110 fourth and fifth graders from Temple ISD met community mentors at the 16th Wildcat Mentor Kickoff Event—held at the Ralph Wilson Youth Club on Thursday—where students enjoyed an afternoon of fun.  Killeen Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bell County retirees remain worried as the government shutdown continues despite promises that Social Security payments will be made—Rosemary Galvan and a local student fear that political gridlock may prevent timely solutions for paying essentials.  KXXV
  • The government shutdown has put Head Start services at risk for low-income families in Temple. Central Texas 4C said its program will run on approved grants until Jan. 1 — but construction of its new facility in East Temple will face delays if the shutdown continues.  KXXV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Blinn College will host No. 12 Trinity Valley Community College at 3 p.m. today at Cub Stadium in Brenham as the Bucs aim to improve their record—coach Ryan Mahon said that avoiding past penalties and mistakes could help boost the team in the conference standings.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • Friday night high school football in Central Texas saw Levi Leathers lead Axtell to a 35—7 win, Marneko Thomas Jr. make key plays for Chilton, and Jaylen Mason help Harker Heights; KCEN now invites local fans to vote for the Player of the Week.  KCEN-TV
