COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Community members are fighting to save the historic Parrie Haynes Ranch from being sold by trustee Cadence Bank; the ranch was willed for the benefit of orphans and has long served as a local outdoor space. The Cowboy Gathering fundraiser begins today at 6:30 p.m. with live music and a campfire cookout — Saturday features a cowboy breakfast, guided trail rides, an auction and street dance — Sunday ends with a cowboy church service and a final trail ride. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Governor Greg Abbott announced on Thursday a $1.6 million JET grant to six Central Texas colleges — including Temple College — to help train more than 540 students for high-demand careers like nursing, mechanics, and truck driving. The funds will be used to purchase equipment and support career and technical education programs. KXXV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City offices and facilities in Temple are closing or operating with modified hours on Labor Day—residents should check for changes in trash and recycling pick-up schedules. Other local services, including transit and libraries, have also adjusted their hours in observance of the holiday. KXXV
- ➤ About 750 new laws will take effect on Sept. 1 to change Texas rules on schools, water projects and taxes. Gov. Abbott signed bills that expand the school voucher program, boost public school funding and improve water and safety rules while some measures will start soon and others wait for future approval. - ➤ The Bell County Public Health District board removed Amy J. Yeager as director after placing her on leave in July—Robert Kirkpatrick was named acting director to oversee the district until a new hire is found. Killeen Daily Herald
