  • A downtown nonprofit is hosting regular sewing classes to help area children in need by teaching them useful skills—this program is part of ongoing community outreach.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • Immanuel Lutheran Church in Killeen has collected over $800 to buy backpacks and school supplies for school age children—helping families get ready for the new school year.  Killeen Daily Herald

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reports that the average price of regular unleaded gas in the Killeen area decreased since last week — drivers could see reduced fuel costs at stations nearby.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock said that Texas cities, counties, transit systems — and special-purpose taxing districts will receive $1.3 billion in sales tax allocations in August. The funds will help support local projects across the region.  Temple Daily Telegram

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Children enjoyed a rodeo-themed back-to-school bash at New Day Fellowship Church, 510 E. Ave. J on Saturday—despite the heat, the carnival event helped prepare them for the upcoming school year.  Killeen Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Temple City Council approved more than $250,000 to fix black mold at Fire Station 2 after public outcry—officials said work will start soon to protect our firefighters.  Temple Daily Telegram
  • Todd L. Erskine, a fourth-generation Temple native and Temple High School graduate, was promoted to major general by the U.S. Army — he now leads a key Army Reserve unit.  Killeen Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • COVID still affects Bell County public health as its arrival in 2019 changed how care is given—health workers are adjusting to these changes.  Killeen Daily Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Salado Eagles ended their preseason practice on Saturday with First Responders Day, where police and firefighters joined the team for drills and friendly challenges as Coach Ricky Beaty said the event honored those who serve the community. The Eagles will start their season at Troy at 7:30 p.m. on August 29.  KCEN-TV
