COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bell County Commissioner Louie Minor is pushing to change the shelter to a no-kill facility after over 400 animals were put down since January and local residents raised concerns during a public discussion—a budget meeting on Aug. 4 will review funding and new plans while community input is encouraged.  KCEN-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Law enforcement, firefighters and a dive team are searching for a drowning victim along Cedar Creek west of Temple (officials say crews responded quickly following reports of the incident).  Temple Daily Telegram

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bell County Comic Con—one of Central Texas' largest pop culture events—begins today in Belton as fans, cosplayers, and celebrities gather, with founder Johnny Huang saying the event is expected to draw about 40,000 attendees, including roughly 10,000 from outside Bell County.  KCEN-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Temple ISD officials welcomed 107 new teachers during a New Teacher Induction ceremony on Friday, marking a significant step in preparing for the upcoming school year.  Temple Daily Telegram
  • Central Texas College marks 60 years of service—supporting workforce training and economic growth across Central Texas, the college has played a major role in regional development.  Killeen Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 600 animals have been euthanized at Bell County Animal Shelter in 2025, sparking public calls for more transparency, increased shelter space, and a change in oversight from the sheriff’s department—issues that animal advocates say are worsened by limited capacity. Commissioner Louie Minor held a public meeting Friday and will host a follow-up session Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the courthouse to discuss potential reforms.  KXXV

  • Joephillip Guzman, a graduate of Shoemaker High, signed with the Baltimore Orioles as an undrafted free agent and will begin his minor league career in Florida; he hopes to inspire young baseball players in Central Texas (his father is a Fort Hood veteran).  KXXV
