COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cafe Soleil, a donation-based community kitchen, opened today at 611 S. 3rd Street to offer healthy meals and job training for local residents. After a soft launch on Friday, the cafe hosts an art show today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—its menu relies on fresh ingredients from local farms and community gardens.  KCEN-TV
  • Communities In Schools The Heart of Texas and H-E-B announced Friday a partnership to raise funds for school supplies for underserved students and families, with donations accepted online + at H-E-B stores. The funds will support local efforts for at least 4,000 students in 35 campuses for the upcoming school year.  KCEN-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., Temple Police said a vehicle crashed into a concrete pillar on northbound I-35 near exit 305 and caught fire, killing one person — officials later cleared the scene and advised drivers to use exit 304 or earlier.  KCEN-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Killeen police officers conducted a drug bust in Harker Heights that netted nearly 3 pounds of cocaine, mushrooms, ecstasy, and cash—resulting in two arrests.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • A jury in an armed assault trial this week reached a not guilty verdict Friday—after hearing from the victim, defendant and 13 others.  Killeen Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Temple approved a switch from twice-monthly to quarterly on-demand brush and bulky item pickups on July 18 — residents can request up to 12 cubic yards per service each quarter while six cubic yards are covered by the monthly utility fee.  KCEN-TV
