COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 7, the Fort Cavazos Youth Fishing Derby brought families together at Belton Lake as volunteers taught children and parents to bait hooks, cast lines, and safely release fish, with military families like Warrant Officer Justin Forbes and his 9-year-old son experiencing their first fishing day. Prizes were awarded for first catch, smallest fish, and biggest catch as the event built lasting community bonds.  Killeen Daily Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 20, a deputy tried to stop parolee Colby Martinez near County Road 470 but he fled his vehicle, left on foot, entered a river to remove his ankle monitor, and officers used drones and a helicopter to search for him + he is known for evading arrest and remains at large.  KXXV
  • A Bell County grand jury indicted a suspect in Killeen for murder after a fatal stabbing that occurred four weeks ago.  Killeen Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Temple College Foundation said its Race for a Cause: 2025 Kentucky Derby event raised $128,333 to support students at Temple College. The money will help fund student programs.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • The Temple Independent School District Board of Trustees was named the 2025 Region 12 School Board of the Year — it was also named the regional nominee for Outstanding School Board of the Year.  Killeen Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • TJ Ortiz from Moody was chosen from over 100,000 applicants to run in the New York City Marathon for the Lupus Research Alliance and will compete in November; her 2018 lupus diagnosis has spurred her to raise awareness and inspire her children. She said the opportunity fuels her determination to show that living with a chronic illness does not end any dreams—with each step, she proves hope endures.  KCEN-TV
  • A local dermatologist from Baylor Scott and White advises using sunscreen with SPF 50 to lower the risk of sun damage as summer heat increases; she emphasizes alternative protection through shade, hats, and long-sleeved clothing. Dr. Kate Fiala recommends tinted mineral sunscreen (which protects from blue light) and urges checking its expiration date (since heat can degrade the formula) to ensure proper skin protection.  KXXV
