COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Central Texas College Police Academy honors former Officer Elijah Garretson, known for saving a fellow cadet, who died Jan. 10. Funeral services (with full police honors) will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Cadence Bank Center in Belton.  KCEN-TV
  • Chase Dawson & Presley West were congratulated on Jan. 14 for their achievements in the local community, with officials recognizing their contributions. Their accolade highlights Temple’s commitment to celebrating local success.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • Temple and Belton mayors will host the C.A.R.E. Leadership Network’s New Year’s Community Annual Revival Service (3 p.m. Jan. 18) at 156 E Central Ave, where the public is invited to join in prayer. The event aims to unite local communities.  Temple Daily Telegram
  • Local historian Joseph K. George and the Texas State Historical Commission are preserving the Pauper Cemetery of Pepper Creek when TXDOT maps from Jan. 14 show the burial ground along I-35 will not be moved, keeping 117+ graves in place. Plans call for a monument to honor those interred.  KCEN-TV

  • Temple ISD board approved another part of the 2025 bond project & updated legal policies during its Monday evening meeting, setting the stage for upcoming district improvements.  Killeen Daily Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study from Texas Advanced Energy Business Alliance finds that home power sources like solar panels and battery backups could lower electricity bills for all if Oncor embraces these resources. Bell County homeowner Kevin Martin said his rooftop system now saves him hundreds monthly amid rate talks.  KXXV

  • The City of Temple will host its 2026 Neighborhood Leadership Academy, giving residents a chance to learn about city processes and ways to get involved in their neighborhoods (additional details will be shared soon).  Temple Daily Telegram

  • The Grayson College Vikings women’s basketball team defeated the Temple Leopards 72-67 in a tightly contested game.  Killeen Daily Herald
  • The Grayson College Vikings beat the Temple Leopards 99 to 98 in a tight conference game in Denison; the one-point win marks their first conference victory and has local fans excited.  Killeen Daily Herald
